Results of a National Survey on Recovery Friendly Workplace (RFW) Programs and the Need to Establish a RFW Program in NYS

Speaker: Allison Weingarten, LMSW

Description: Workplace intervention is a key to the national drug control strategy in the form of Recovery Friendly Workplace programs. A national survey by the National Clearinghouse for Worker Safety and Health Training on the landscape of Recovery Friendly Workplace Programs reveals that these programs are newly emerging, under resourced, reducing their ability to prevent new addiction due to occupational factors, provide support to workers who are struggling, and re-employment for people in recovery. The NYS Coalition to Prevent Addiction and Support Recovery in Employment joins employers, labor organizations, recovery and treatment providers, public health, and government officials to establish RFW in NYS. We are calling on the Problem Gambling Recovery community to join the coalition and act to make RFW in NYS a reality.

This presentation provides a detailed discourse on addiction and the addiction cycle. It compares gambling disorders with substance use disorders, focusing mainly on the role of dopamine in maintaining these behavioral disorders. Areas of the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions implicated in gambling disorder and other addictive disorders are examined. The intersection of gambling and video gaming: Social casino games, loot boxes and eSports betting

Speaker: Dr. Vivien Wen Li Anthony

Description: Video games are a form of interactive, digital entertainment, which commonly do not involve betting real-world money on games of chance. However, driven by a desire to earn money through microtransaction and player trading, gambling/gambling-like activities have been added to video games and gained popularity among players. These popular gambling/gambling-like activities in video games include social casino games, loot boxes, and skin betting. Further, eSports betting, betting on organized video game competitions, has become increasingly popular among young adults. There is a growing concern that the murky nexus of gambling and video gaming could “prime” children to move from recreational video gaming to spending increasing amounts of money on gambling. Therefore, counselors and practitioners in the area of gambling need to be familiar with up-to-date information on this emerging issue.
