Implications of the 2021 National Survey on Gambling Attitudes and Experience

Description: This session will present key findings of the 2021 NGAGE survey along with highlights of the New York sample taken as part of the 2018 survey. Special emphasis will be placed on the survey's findings on sports betting (including the effects of the explosion in legal sports betting) and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wild World of Sports Gambling

Description: Consistently, there are more creative and fast paced forms of entertainment to help people escape, cope, or adjust to the stressors of life. Whether finding it through substance, technology, or a variety of other methods, individuals are becoming more daring, tech savvy and tech dependent. One area that has seen an explosion of growth is emergence of legalized sports gambling. Coupled the ability offered by some states to place bets online, individuals now have access to information and opportunities to wager 24 / 7. This workshop will explore the psychological aspects and gambling mechanics common to sports gambling while reviewing responsible gambling practices and resources for those impacted by problem gambling.

Cannabis and Gambling: A Growing Issue

Speaker: Dr. Timothy Fong, MPA, Administrator, California Friday Night Live Partnership, Tulane County Office of Education

Description: This presentation will discuss the current landscape of how cannabis and gambling behavior interact. Clinical cases and real-life scenarios of how marijuana and gambling interact with each other will be described. Data taken from California Gambling Education and Treatment Services Program (CalGETS) will spotlight these relationships. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how legalization of marijuana is likely to impact gambling and gambling disorder in a variety of settings, from gaming venues to the treatment clinic. Lastly, clinical guidance will be offered to review best treatment practices on how to manage cannabis use disorders and gambling disorder.

Reducing the Harms of Gambling for Individuals, Families and Communities

Speaker: Loreen Rugle, PhD, ICGC-II/BACC, ICGD

Description: This workshop will focus on clinical applications of harm reduction strategies to address problematic gambling within the context of a broader public health approach. Defining the harms of gambling that may be experienced by individuals across the continuum of gambling behaviors sets a foundation for understanding a more comprehensive range of public health interventions. Ways in which harm reduction can be used to inform clinical practice as well as prevention and responsible gambling practices will be discussed.

Mindfulness Applications for Problem Gamblers

Speakers: Dr. Rory Reid, International Certified Gambling Counselor, Research Psychologist, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA

Description: Participants will be introduced to mindfulness, and given operational criteria for the most empirically support and generally accepted definition of mindfulness. A brief review of research on mindfulness and gambling disorder will be discussed. We will discuss more specifically some of the neuroscientific research of brain behavior relationships between mindfulness and addictive behaviors illustrating the proposed mechanisms of action associated with mindfulness approaches to addiction. These findings will also make a compelling case for why compromised attentional networks are a significant part of addiction and how this can be address with mindfulness exercises. A cohesive presentation about why mindfulness is a good fit for problem gambling will be offered. More specifically, the clinical features of impulsivity, shame, emotional dysregulation, and stress proneness common among clients with gambling disorder will be highlighted. Next, the presenter will share the research on mindfulness and how it attenuates these issues. Resources from the UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center will be shared and participants will be given online resources for mindfulness exercises and suggested reading materials. This presentation will help providers learn ways to explain and help problem gamblers get excited about, and be willing to adopt mindfulness practices in their recovery programs.
